From the Bench
The things we tell every customer — and most people only learn after waiting too long.
Heel Tips
The clicking sound on tile means metal is already contacting the floor. At that point you've waited too long — the pin can torque and break inside the heel. Come in when the plastic looks low, not when it sounds bad.
Red Soles
The Louboutin red is lacquered paint on leather — not rubber. A single step on concrete can scratch through it. A silicone seal applied before first wear costs $125–145. Restoration after wear starts at $185. Do the math.
Sneakers
The cream-yellow on an Air Force 1 or Jordan midsole isn't age or grime — it's UV oxidizing the peroxide in the foam. De-oxidization reverses the chemistry. What looks permanent usually isn't.
Sole Separation
Super glue and Gorilla Glue work for a week, then fail worse — often pulling foam with them. Athletic shoes need flexible contact cement designed for the application. A $15–60 professional re-glue beats a $0 fix that makes the next repair harder.
Suede
Waxed-suede refinishing doesn't restore the original surface — it gives worn suede a durable, stylish new character. A popular technique for shoes that feel tired but aren't structurally damaged. Worth asking about before you retire them.
Leather
Dry leather cracks fast once it starts. Scratched leather can often be refinished. Cracked leather that's started flaking can only be slowed. The difference between a manageable repair and an unrecoverable one is usually a matter of weeks.
