The most common conversation we have at the bench: a customer walks in holding a pair of Louboutins, the red sole scuffed down to bare leather after a single event. They assumed the soles were tough. They’re not.
Here’s what you need to know before the first wear.
What the red sole actually is
Christian Louboutin’s signature red is a lacquered paint applied over a leather sole. It’s not rubber, not a coating — it’s paint on leather. A single step on concrete can scratch through it. Most customers who’ve paid $800–$1,500 for a pair don’t find this out until it’s already happened.
The fix: silicone seal before wear
We apply a red silicone protective sole over the Louboutin sole — matching the exact red — before the leather ever touches the ground. The silicone takes the impact. If it ever wears, we replace the silicone, not the sole.
Cost: $125–145 applied before wear. The shoe never touches unprotected ground.
Cost of restoration after wear: $185–250+, depending on how far gone the leather is. And the leather is never quite factory again.
When restoration is still possible
If the sole is already worn, don’t assume it’s permanent. We can restore red soles that have worn through the paint, and in many cases back to something close to original. The earlier you bring it in, the better the outcome.
The absolute limit is when the leather sole itself wears through to the welt — at that point you’re looking at a re-sole, which is a different (and more expensive) job.
A note on heel tips
Louboutin stilettos have a narrow heel cap — often only a few millimeters of plastic above the metal pin. That tip wears fast. Once the plastic is gone, the metal contacts the floor and the sound alone will tell you something is wrong.
Heel tip replacement runs $20–35. Wait until the metal wears through to the heel body and you’re looking at structural damage that can’t always be undone.
The short version
If you’re buying Louboutins — or already own a pair that’s never been soled — come in before the first wear. Thirty minutes at the bench saves hundreds later.
